"Condor goes WILD during Bakersfield Condors Game"
Something like this happened to Atlanta Hawks a few years ago too...

NBA game cancelled due to... slippery floor?
Does any league have stranger reasons for delays of game than the NBA? A hawk delayed a game in Atlanta few years ago, and another was delayed by a video scoreboard catching fire. And pre-game pyro shows and smoke machines have delayed games as well.
The latest: NBA game cancelled due to slippery floor. Wish I could say it was on banana giveaway night, but alas the truth is more mundane than that. The floor was slippery because it was installed over an ice surface and it was just too wet.

More on the New Jersey lighting problem the other night
KuklasKorner links to to two articles about last Friday's Devils-Lightning game in New Jersey, after the game was stopped due to a lighting problem.
First, blogger Tom Gulitti complains that the New Jersey organization failed to properly communicate was was happening with fans.
Second, NJ.com has an article about the costs and penalties incurred when a game is delayed or cancelled.

Thirty year anniversary of Disco Demolition Night
Disco Sucks! Disco Sucks!
July 12, 1979.
A twilight doubleheader at Comiskey Park.
The White Sox vs. The Tigers.
Between games, 24 year old Steve Dahl, popular disc jockey from Chicago White Station Route 98 would take the field at the head of his so-called Anti-Disco Army to blow up thousands of disco records.
What happened next is part of baseball history. Here's a video from ESPN looking back at the infamous night. (The actual moment of demolition is about halfway through.)
Interesting video, not just for the recap of Disco Demolition Night. Also videos and photos of Bill and Mike Veeck, and some of the other wacky promos at Comiskey in the 70's. I liked the shot of the old scoreboard, set up to politely read "PLEASE RETURN TO YOUR SEATS." And Bill Veeck and Harry Caray singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" in a futile effort to calm things down.
Mike Veeck says at the end: "We did a promotion that caused a forfeiture. I regret that. As a cultural event, I'm kinda proud of it."

Animals in sports: Hawk & dog delay games
Two animal stories came across our desk today:
- In Atlanta, a Hawks basketball game was delayed by their mascot -- a real, live hawk: "Spirit, the Hawks mascot, has a set pattern of flight whenever he is allowed to go out on his own. But the mascot deviated from the schedule and flew a bit through the stands, landing on a shot clock camera. The game had to be stopped early in the first quarter so that Spirit could be coaxed down." (source: Associated Content)
- In Greensboro, Yogi the dog was ejected from a baseball game after, um, soiling the field. Read more from Ben's Biz Blog...

Video scoreboard catches fire in Seattle
The Seattle Supersonics video scoreboard caught on fire the other night. It actually wasn't the scoreboard itself, but a lighting fixture inside the scoreboard that caught fire. The game was delayed as the scoreboard was lowered and firefighters doused the flames. Here's the video:
